The elegant New Town remains rooted in the Georgian era, while over in the Old Town ancient addresses – such as Whitehorse Close, Bakehouse Close and Riddles Court – retain their medieval character.

Upmarket Moray Place in the western fringes of Edinburgh's New Town is a firm favourite among filmmakers. Pictured we can see a scene being filmed for Julian Fellowes' 2020 period drama 'Belgravia'. Photo: Jane Barlow
6. Cramond Village
With properties dating back to the early 1600s, Cramond Village is a real step back through the centuries. Whitewashed facades and pantile roofs add to the historic feel of the place. Photo: Jon Savage
7. Whitehorse Close
Our second entry from the Canongate is the stunning Whitehorse Close. While much of its medieval fabric is now lost - it was sensitively rebuilt in the 1950s - the close still retains a certain period charm. Photo: PAUL PARKE

Situated on the bonnie banks of the Water of Leith in Dean Village, Well Court was commissioned in the 1880s by Sir John Findlay, then owner of The Scotsman, and has retained its historic character. Photo: Photographer: Scott Louden
