1980s Edinburgh: 19 photos of Edinburgh in 1989, including Guthrie Street gas explosion and Kylie Minogue visit

Nineteen Eighty-Nine saw Aussie pop superstar Kylie Minogue and Brazilian football legend Pele visit Edinburgh – but there was much sadness too as the Guthrie Street gas explosion claimed two lives.

The gas explosion in the Cowgate shook the whole city, with 21-year-old student Nicola Donnelly and 35-year-old lecturer Peter Small killed in the blast.

Early in the morning of October 4, 1989, a cast-iron gas pipe fractured, leaking gas into sewers on the Cowgate and into the tenement at number 27 Guthrie Street.

The explosion was then detonated at 7:25am, by some kind of spark or an electrical switch being turned on in the building.

In other news, Kylie was all smiles when she was spotted getting into her car outside Edinburgh Airport, and the great Pele paid a visit to Tynecastle Park in Gorgie.
