The year 2023 saw a wide variety of stories in the headlines – from the UK’s first driverless buses starting operation across the Forth Road Bridge to the Capital’s final farewell to former boxing world champion Ken Buchanan. There was also the return of trams to Leith Walk with the opening of the extension from York Place to Newhaven; Beyonce’s concert at Murrayfield and on of the city’s celebrated authors being honoured at Buckingham Palace.

25. Rankin receives honour
Edinburgh crime writer Sir Ian Rankin received his knighthood from the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace. The honour recognised services to literature and to charity. He said it was "absolutely thrilling". Sir Ian - creator of Detective Inspector John Rebus and winner of several national and international awards - has senn his books translated into 22 languages and become bestsellers on several continents. 26. Entry charge for St Giles
Edinburgh's St Giles' Cathedral said it was planning to introduce a £6 entry charge for tourists - but Capital residents might still be allowed in free. Up until now the Church of Scotland's most famous building has simply asked visitors to make a donation to help pay for its upkeep, with a recommended figure of £6, but actual donations average just 50p per visitor. Donations have declined since Covid, while insurance costs have increased and the Kirk Session, which is in charge of the cathedral, said it was increasingly unable to maintain the fabric of the building.
