9. Have an art attack
Booking a free visit to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is perfect for firing up children's imaginations. With a wide range of exhibitions, a huge sculpture park to explore, and numerous activities to enjoy, it's a great day out that's a great deal less stuffy than your average gallery. 10. Climb a volcano
Towering over the city, Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano that last erupted around 340 million years ago - when what is now Scotland was located close to the Equator. The views from the top are the best in Edinburgh and there are plenty of great picnic spots, lochs and ruins to explore on the way. Photo: Canva/Getty Images

11. Go wild swimming
Edinburgh has a number of great wild swimming spots. The most obvious is the long sandy beach at Portobello, but venture to Wardie Bay near Granton Harbour and you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins as you swim. Photo: Canva/Getty Images
