Luxury hotel team up with Edinburgh Zoo to offer themed afternoon tea treat
A five-star Edinburgh hotel has teamed up with Edinburgh Zoo for an extra special themed afternoon tea.
From April until June 30, to celebrate one of Edinburgh’s most loved attractions, guests can enjoy an afternoon tea, suitable for all ages, in the iconic Peacock Alley lounge of Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian.
Creatively designed and beautifully handmade by the hotel’s talented pastry chefs, the Edinburgh Zoo treat features graceful, Chilean flamingos made of strawberry milkshake choux buns, cute Queensland koalas made of mint chocolate chip petit gateau, giant pandas made of triple chocolate delice, miniature giraffes made of watermelon ganache filled macarons and adorable king penguins made of deconstructed banoffee pie.
Accompanied by a selection of savoury treats, the afternoon tea also includes Scottish roast beef, onion marmalade and truffle mayonnaise on sliced baguette, smoked salmon and dill crème fraiche sandwich, sun-dried tomato and ricotta quiche, followed by a freshly baked plain and sultana scones and an array of loose leaf teas to choose from.
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh will donate £5 per afternoon tea to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), the wildlife conservation charity which leads Edinburgh Zoo, to support their great work to safeguard threatened species in Scotland and around the world.
There is also the option to gift an additional £5 which will provide a £10 donation to the zoo. Whether the donation feeds a giant panda in Edinburgh or protects a chimpanzee in Uganda, it will be used immediately to care for the much loved animals.
David Field, RZSS CEO, said: “Seeing some of our amazing animals recreated as delicious treats is incredible and it is fantastic to see our world-famous giant pandas and penguins featuring alongside new additions like the giraffes we hope will be arriving soon.
“After a very challenging year, we are so grateful for support of Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh which will help our charity continue to protect species at risk of extinction across the globe.”
Dale MacPhee, general manager of Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian, said: “As one of the city’s most loved attractions, Edinburgh Zoo has a special place in all our hearts. Our Pastry Chefs got a lot of joy out of creating each of these pastries so that our guests can enjoy them while also supporting the wonderful work of the zoo.”
The Edinburgh Zoo Afternoon Tea is priced at £40 per person and available as classic, vegan and free from gluten.
The Peacock Alley Lounge will be open for bookings from April 26 from Monday to Friday 12pm until 5pm.
