New North Berwick pub and restaurant opens doors after former Nether Abbey Hotel undergoes seven-figure makeover
Buzzworks CEO Kenny Blair said that the new venue has brought the former Nether Abbey Hotel into a “new chapter”
A brand new pub and restaurant in North Berwick has opened its doors after a seven-figure makeover of the former Nether Abbey Hotel.
The Bass & Barrel opened its doors on Tuesday, October 20 on the site of the historic East Lothian hotel, which closed earlier this year for refurbishment after being purchased by hospitality operator Buzzworks.

The new venue has been designed as a neighbourhood pub and restaurant for the North Berwick community but will also stay true to its hotel roots, with 12 bedrooms available to book.
The Bass & Barrel pub and restaurant will be open seven days a week from early until late, giving locals and visitors a chance to pop in for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as a relaxing drink.
The bar features draughts beers and local ales and a selections of wine, spirits, and signature and classic cocktails.
The menu will also feature fresh seafood, prime Scotch steaks and pub classics, with The Bass & Barrel working with suppliers such as Edgefield Craft Butchers.

Kenny Blair, chief executive of Buzzworks, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to finally open the doors to The Bass & Barrel and welcome the North Berwick community into the new venue.
“A huge amount of work has gone into transforming the former Nether Abbey Hotel, and we’re incredibly proud to bring it into a new chapter.
“We wanted to create somewhere that feels like a proper local, with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where people can come together, feel at home and enjoy spending time.
“We can’t wait for everyone to come in, experience The Bass & Barrel for themselves and hopefully make it a place they’ll return to time and time again.”
The Nether Abbey Hotel closed its doors in January following the sale of the historic site.
The venue had been in operation since 1957, with the Stewart Family running the hotel for more than 60 years.
After selling the landmark hotel to Buzzworks, Stirling and Jela Stewart, from The Nether Abbey Hotel, said: “After more than 60 wonderful years in our family, we are incredibly proud of the legacy of The Nether Abbey Hotel and the role it has played in the North Berwick community.
“Buzzworks shares our family values of providing quality, service and community spirit, and we’re confident the hotel is in excellent hands as it begins its next chapter.”
