Here are 22 shops, attractions and other organisations that closed their doors in 2023.
5. Gorgie Farm
The beloved urban farm closed its gates on January 16 after its owners, The LOVE Group, reported ‘significant financial challenges.’ Handing the keys back to the council three years after taking over the lease, the closure saw 30 staff facing redundancy, 80 volunteers being dismissed and approximately 100 animals needing rehomed. Talks to reopen the three-acre city farm as a community venture remain ongoing. Photo: Neil Johnstone
6. Pilrig Motors
The car accessories and repair shop closed in February after trading for 88 years. Family-run Pilrig Motors in Leith Walkopened before the Second World War and was run by brothers Peter, Alistair and Douglas Banks when their father retired. The decision to close came after Peter, 66, announced his retirement, after working in the motor shop since he was 14. Photo: Google
7. Pilmeny Youth Centre
The youth centre on Buchanan Street in Leith closed its doors in December 2022 after serving the local community for 33 years. We spoke with centre manager, Bryan Maughan in February 2023 when he was handing over the keys. Bryan said: “The teenagers have all been in for the last time, people who have been through the doors over the last 30 years have been in contact – I lot of them are now parents themselves. I’ve got lots and lots of memories – I really hope the building remains a community space and can provide some of the good stuff that we did in the past.” Photo: Pilmeny Youth Centre
8. East Lothian Camera Shop
The East Lothian Camera Shop on Winton Place in Tranent, closed up shop in March after 46 years of trading. Owners of the family business said on Facebook: “It’s been an incredible time in 46 years of trading in Tranent, we have seen a few lows but the number of highs has been overwhelming! We started off taking photos at Tranent gala day and printing in a dark room, to taking photos of the queen and printing in an instant! Many many thanks for all the custom over the years so much appreciated.” Photo: Third Party
