9/11 memorial service to take place at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh to mark 25th anniversary of terror attacks

The world will be marking 25 years since the 9/11 terror attacks this Friday (September 10).

A memorial service to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attack is taking place in Edinburgh.

The United States Consulate General Edinburgh will be hosting the event at St Giles’ Cathedral at 3pm on Friday, September 11.

This year marks a quarter of a century since the 2001 coordinated al-Qaeda terror attacks in the United States.

The suicide attacks most notably caused the collapse of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in New York City after two planes were flown into the skyscrapers.

Elsewhere, hijacked planes crashed into the Pentagon building in Virginia with another being crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

Around 2,977 victims died in the attacks alongside the 19 suicide bombers.

The US Consulate General Edinburgh said: “The United States Consulate General Edinburgh invites you to a service of remembrance, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“Please join us to remember those we lost, those who responded with courage and the many lives changed that day.

“Members of the public are kindly asked to arrive in good time to be seated before the service begins. While St Giles’ Cathedral offers generous seating capacity, general admission will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis until the venue is full.

“We hope you will join us in this moment of remembrance and solidarity.”
