Police officers were called to Dunfermline Cemetery on Saturday, May 1, just after 10am, where anti-lockdown messages and swearwords had been scrawled across the infant memorials in spray paint.

One message made references to “covid hoax” while others had vile phrases painted on.

Residents banded together to clean the graffiti and restore the headstones to good conditions, with several taking to social media to share their thanks to those who helped and condemn the disgusting act.

One person wrote: “Well done to all involved in the cleanup! Still can’t get my head around why someone would think that this is ok. They have obviously never felt the hurt and grief from losing someone close.”

Another said: “Really sad that someone would do this. Absolutely disgraceful act of disrespect. Well done to all who have restored faith in humanity and helped to put this right. Fantastic effort.”
