She sustained a head injury and a man was also assaulted by another man.

One suspect is white, slim, around 6ft with short brown hair. He was wearing a dark coloured tracksuit.

Inspector Keith Scott said: “There were plenty of people in the Gardens around the time of the incident and I would appeal to them to get in touch with us.

"People often capture footage on their mobile phones and someone could have footage which could assist our enquiries. I would ask people who were there to contact us.

"Any small piece of information could prove vital in helping us trace the male responsible.”

The Gardens were closed early on Friday, with rangers asking the public to leave around 6.30pm with the area fully closed by 7pm.

Usually the gardens stay open from dawn until dusk - about 10pm just now - and begin emptying about 9pm.

It is understood Police Scotland asked the local authority to consider closing earlier because they expected the city centre to be busy on Friday night with football fans, ahead of the Scotland/England clash at 8pm.

Hundreds of football fans descended on the city centre for the match, celebrating into the small hours following the 0-0 draw, resulting in a heavy police presence on Princes Street.
