Ryan Campbell, 27, was spotted carrying a young child outside the property in Mayfield when Police Scotland officers arrived on the scene to deal with an unrelated matter.

The officers were speaking to Campbell inside the home when he issued threats to murder them before he smashed a glass on the floor in front of them.

Procurator fiscal depute Jack Castor told Edinburgh Sheriff Court that the officers were on mobile patrol and had been asked to attend the property due an alleged disturbance at around 6.25pm on March 16 last year.

The four officers spotted Campbell holding the child in his arms and when they approached him he was initially compliant and allowed them entry.

But once inside the flat Campbell was said to have “put the child down and walked into the kitchen” where he “picked up a glass and held it above his head”.

Mr Castor said Campbell threatened to smash the glass on the floor before he “threatened to murder the officers by shooting them”.

Campbell, of Willow Road, Mayfield, continued to shout and swear during the confrontation after throwing the glass to the floor he was arrested when he attempted to flee the home.

During the arrest procedure Campbell then assaulted PC Ben Stobbart by attempting to bite him on his right hand.

Solicitor Jennifer Cameron, defending, said her client was still in a relationship with his children’s mother and had been “under the influence of alcohol” at the time.

Ms Cameron said during yesterday’s hearing that Campbell has not been in trouble since the event and has nothing outstanding against him.

Sheriff Nigel Ross sentenced Campbell to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work in the community as punishment.

Campbell pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and did shout, swear and destroy property at an address in Mayfield, Midlothian, on March 16 last year.

He also pled guilty to assaulting PC Stobbart by attempting to bite him on the hand as he was being detained during the same incident.
