Speaking to the Edinburgh Evening News, local councillor Scott Arthur said: “This is clearly concerning and sad news, and my thoughts are very much with the family of the woman who died. I am reassured that the police have confirmed that the fire was not suspicious and that the 40-year-old man has now been released from hospital - I hope he makes a full recovery.

"My brother was killed in a fire in 1988 and I still think about him almost every day. This death in Oxgangs is reminder that fire still poses a significant risk to us, and I hope people will use it as a prompt to check their smoke detectors are working.”

Details of how the fire in Oxgangs on Saturday started are yet to be confirmed.
