An Edinburgh dad who suffered a severe heart attack while travelling home from a holiday in the south of France has died in hospital.

Andrew Weyzig, 50, was driving through Belgium after visiting family in Aix-en-Provence when he was forced to pull over after suffering a cardiac arrest last month.

He was rushed to hospital in nearby Liege where he was placed in an induced coma and his worried family including son Brandon, daughter Grace and mum Anne flew out to be at his bedside.

Friends and family then raised a massive £19,000 in just three days to fund the cost of bringing Mr Weyzig back to Scotland by air ambulance last week. But after receiving six days of intensive treatment at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, he lost his fight for life on Tuesday evening.

Hundreds of tributes have since poured in for the popular dad-of-two after son Brandon posted a poignant message on social media this week.

Brandon, 27, said: “We were so overwhelmed by the generosity of so many people who donated to the cause to bring my dad home after he had suffered a heart attack in Belgium.

“It was a huge shock for me and my sister Grace to hear he had taken ill like that as he was such a fit and healthy man. We really hoped he would recover when we got him home to Edinburgh but even though he fought hard he couldn’t really recover from the massive heart attack. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening with all his family around him.

“He was more than a parent to us both, he truly was a best friend to us and we couldn’t have asked for a better dad. He would have been overwhelmed at the amount of people who donated and who have paid tribute to him. As a family we would also just like to say how much we appreciate all the love shown to our dad.”

Devastated friends have also left emotional tributes to Mr Weyzig on social media following his passing. Rachel Gold posted: “Brandon and Grace, I don’t have the words. You have been extraordinary these last few weeks and done your dad so proud. Wishing Andrew a peaceful rest and sending all of the family all of my love. I am so sorry.”

Denis Staskewitsch said: “My condolences to your family Brendon. Your dad was such a fine man and it’s so sad to read the tragic news. We will all miss him. RIP Andy.”

And Nelly Barney added: “Your Dad will be missed by literally hundreds of people.  Our energy retrofit guru, football fives wizard, colleague, friend, neighbour and just a great bloke who I shall miss dearly.”

Mr Weyzig, who had recently moved to Portobello, was employed as a manager with the national fuel poverty scheme Warmworks, funded by the Scottish Government.

He was also a popular player with Almond Star Over 35s Football Club after signing earlier this year.

A club spokesperson said: “Everyone at Almond Star Football Club is devastated to hear of the passing of our defender Andrew Weyzig.  Andrew made his debut against Penicuik in the league for us back in May and in such a short period gained a lot of respect from the boys.  The club would like to send our love and support to the family of Andrew.”
