Iconic Edinburgh pub set to feature on front of CAMRA good pub guide

The watering hole frequented by Sir Ian Rankin has been a city staple since it opened in the 1800s

An Edinburgh pub has become the first ever in Scotland to appear on the cover of the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) annual Good Beer Guide.

The iconic Oxford Bar on Young Street fronts CAMRA’s 2027 guide, which includes a foreword from none other than crime writer Sir Ian Rankin, who has featured the bar prominently in his Rebus detective series.

Tucked away behind George Street, the Edinburgh institution has been a public house since the 1800s. Sir Ian reportedly chose the pub as the drinking den of his fictional detective due to it being a real-life hotspot for police officers.

Sir Ian will make a private appearance at the pub to celebrate the launch of CAMRA’s guide compiling more than 4,500 pubs across the UK serving real ale. The 54th edition’s listings are decided by the organisation’s membership and includes 1,7000 breweries and 5,000 beers.
