Eight weeks of closures on city bypass and M8 at Hermiston Gait begin

The essential works will take place in stages between July and October.

Eight weeks of overnight closures on the M8 and A720 at Hermiston Gait are set to begin on Monday night.

The M8 slip roads and the A720 flyover over the roundabout will be closed at various points in the coming months to allow for street light upgrades.

Works will take place between 8pm and 4.30am on Mondays to Fridays from July 13 to October 16.

The upgrades begin on the A720 eastbound flyover, which will be closed overnight from July 13 to July 17, and July 20 to July 24.

Between 8pm and 4.30am, eastbound traffic on the bypass should proceed over Hermiston Gait roundabout.

The M8 eastbound off-slip to Gogar will then be closed for 10 nights, between August 10 and August 14, and August 17 and August 21.

During these closures M8 eastbound traffic should continue along the M8 to the roundabout, and take the first exit for Gogar.

The final upgrades will see the A720 westbound flyover and the M8 westbound on-slip from Calder roundabout closed overnight for two weeks in both September and October.

In September, the closures will take place on September 7 until September 11, and from September 14 to September 18.

The following month’s closures will run from October 5 to October 9, and October 12 until October 16.

On these dates from on the A720 westbound should proceed over Hermiston Gait roundabout, and traffic from the A720 wishing to join M8 westbound should also continue on to the roundabout and join from there.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “It is essential for the safety of the workforce that we close these flyovers and slip roads while streetlighting upgrade works take place.

“There are alternative routes available nearby and we’ll do this at night to minimise the impact, so we do not expect these works to cause significant disruption.

“Our advice if you need to travel via Hermiston Gait at night during this period is to check whether closures will be in place and allow a few extra minutes for your journey if necessary.

“We’re grateful to road users for their understanding.”
