A building has been evacuated as a fire has broken out at a block of flats in Muirhouse

Firefighters have rescued four adults and one child after a blaze destroyed the roof of a four-storey block of flats in Edinburgh.

Emergency services were called to the property on Ferry Gait Place in the Muirhouse area of the city shortly after 10am on Thursday.

A local resident said their partner called the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service after spotting smoke, before flames erupted from the roof just minutes later.

They said: “It was pretty shocking. Nothing like this happens around here and it tends to be pretty quiet.”
