Locals thank family for 'wonderful hospitality' as popular restaurant changes hands after 50 years
Locals called it an ‘end of an era’ for the popular spot on the East Lothian high street.
Locals have paid tribute to the family behind a popular Indian restaurant in Musselburgh who have announced they are stepping away from the business after 50 years.
The Khan family, who have run Shish Mahal for almost five decades, announced their departure in an emotional post on Facebook on Friday.
They said the restaurant will be under new ownership and management from Monday as the family look to explore new business opportunities.

The family wrote: “What started nearly five decades ago has grown into so much more than a restaurant. We’ve had the privilege of serving generations of families, celebrating your special occasions, and becoming part of the Musselburgh community.
“We truly cannot thank you enough for your loyalty and support over the years. As a family, we have made the decision to pursue new business opportunities, and with that, our journey at Shish Mahal has come to an end.
They continued: “If you’ve ever enjoyed a meal with us, we’d love to welcome you one last time this weekend. Come and enjoy the food that has proudly served the people of Musselburgh for almost 50 years, and help us give Shish Mahal the farewell it deserves.
“To every customer, friend, and member of staff who has been part of this journey—thank you. Your support has meant everything to us, and we’ll always be grateful for the memories we’ve shared.
“We wish the new owners every success as they begin their own chapter, and we hope Shish Mahal continues to be a place the community enjoys for many years to come.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Musselburgh.”
The post was met with an outpouring of support from customers who had enjoyed the restaurant over the years.
One regular said: “Had my first Indian meal there in 1979 aged 16. Been going regularly since then.
“Good luck to the Khan family. Thank you for your service for all these years.”
Another disappointed customer said: “I’ve been a customer since living in Musselburgh and even travelled from Haddington to get my takeaways from you!
“Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality and kindness. Wishing all the family the best for the future.”
