Hit Netflix series Dept. Q has been spotted filming in Canonmills as they shoot for season two

The second series of the crime drama is now 15 weeks into a 20-week shoot

Filming for the second series of Netflix hit Dept. Q was under way in Edinburgh, with camera crews having been spotted in the city.

Film crews were spotted working on Rodney Street in Canonmills on Tuesday afternoon, with filming equipment and tracks set up at the location.

Images show a large production crew working around cameras and lighting equipment as scenes for the second season were filmed.

As locals walked by, a public notice sign could be seen on the street nearby, warning residents that "filming [was] in progress” and apologising for any inconvenience caused.

The sighting comes as the Edinburgh-set crime drama Dept. Q enters the latter stages of its production schedule.

Filming for the new episodes kicked off in June and is expected to continue until October, with streets around Edinburgh previously closed to accommodate production crews.

Creator and writer-director Scott Frank and stars including Matthew Goode and Kate Dickie took a break from filming on Sunday to appear at the Bloody Scotland crime writing festival in Stirling.

Executive producer Rob Bullock revealed during the event that the cast and crew are also working on night shoots as part of the intense schedule.

The second series is being filmed across Edinburgh and further afield, with crews travelling to Aberdeen for scenes at locations including Bon Accord Baths.

More than 100 locations across Scotland are being used for the new series, with Leith’s FirstStage Studios once again acting as a hub for the production.

Familiar Edinburgh locations are also returning, including Argyle House, which doubles as the fictional police headquarters in the series.

The building is currently earmarked for demolition but is expected to remain standing until at least 2033. Production crews have reportedly taken digital scans of the building in case it needs to be recreated for future filming.

Dept. Q follows DCI Carl Morck, played by Matthew Goode, and his team of detectives working from the basement of an Edinburgh police station.

The group is tasked with investigating cases previously deemed “unsolvable”.

The new season will see the detectives tackle what executive producer Rob Bullock described as a “terrible crime hidden in the highest echelons of Scottish society.”

He added: “It is a story for our times: rich and powerful people who believe they are above the law. Carl, of course, knows otherwise.”

The show is based on the series of novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, with the second season understood to draw from ‘Disgrace’, the second book in the series.

Goode will return alongside Alexej Manvelov as Akram Salim, Leah Byrne as Rose Dickson and Jamie Sives as James Hardy.

Other returning cast members include Mark Bonnar, Aaron McVeigh, Kate Dickie and Sanjeev Kohli.

A number of new faces are also set to appear, including Scottish actors like Tony Curran and Alex Ferns.

However, due to other work commitments, Kelly Macdonald will not return as Dr Rachel Irving in the second series, as the Scottish actress works on the HBO series Lanterns.

Unfortunately for fans there has been no release date for season two of Dept Q yet, and because filming is still ongoing, it looks like it might be some time yet before fans can sink their teeth into the drama.
