I’m enjoying my spring staycation at Edinburgh By The Sea - Vladimir McTavish
Overnight, clocks spring forward by one hour, yet we were all glorying in our first taste of spring last weekend.
The sun shining, the weather was wonderfully balmy and I was enjoying one whale of a time in Portobello. I have always enjoyed my trips there, a mere bus ride from Princes Street.

A large number of friends and family have chosen to make their homes in ‘Edinburgh by the Sea’. As most commute into town, our socialising tends to be in the city centre.
Not from now onwards, after two nights enjoying the much less frantic night life offered by Porty’s wonderful bars and restaurants, new and traditional alike.
They give off a more relaxed vibe than the busy, noisy overpriced tourist traps of the Old Town. Nothing like the rather superficial faux-sophistication of the watering holes around George Street. A distinctly bohemian air now mingles with traditional old salty seaside scents.
Stunning views, providing one looks away in the opposite direction to Seafield sewage works, and the ideal place to bring up kids. And as near to the heart of town as Morningside or Barnton. Truly one of the jewels in our Capital’s crown. Yet we have so many jewels in this town we become blinded by their brilliance.
Returning home on Sunday, we stopped off for lunch at the John Hope Gateway cafe in the Botanic Gardens. More stunning springtime views amid the glorious parkland. Attracting visitors from throughout Europe enjoying a springtime city break.
I myself have been such a guest, wondering at the splendour of Paris and Prague. Every year I will work at least one weekend in Berlin.
My wife and I enjoy trips to the zoo, visits to its many art galleries and strolls admiring its stunning architecture. But hang on a minute. We can do all of that at home. Without paying top dollar for a hotel.
Staycation became somewhat of a trend in 2020 out of necessity. Let’s try it now out of choice. Be a tourist at home. Hae’ a guid weekend in Auld Reekie. Haste ye back!
