Robin Williams’ words of wisdom endure

Comedian Robin Williams was a funny man who won a host of awards for acting. He was also wise, writes Steve Cardownie.

On this day in 1951 Robin Williams, the American actor and comedian was born in Chicago, Illinois.

His particular brand of comedy was known and admired both within the United States and further afield and was the inspiration of many an aspiring comedian. One of his better known quotes was: “If you’re that depressed, reach out to someone. And remember, suicide is a permanent solution to what is a temporary problem.” And: “You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.”

He was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for Good Will Hunting, also receiving two Primetime Emmy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and four Grammy Awards.

Obituary: Robin Williams, comedian and actor

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and suffering from increasing depression, anxiety and paranoia brought on by diffuse Lewy body dementia – described by his wife, Susan Schneider, as “the terrorist inside my husband’s brain” – he sadly took his own life at the age of 63 on the 11 August 2014.

His wife said at the time: “I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken.”

One last quote: “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be Kind.”
