Last weekend’s snow in Edinburgh showed that winter is well and truly here. Edinburgh has so many great green spaces to enjoy a nice relaxing walk with friends and family. And in the Lothians there are some more challenging walks to try out, including up the Pentland Hills, offering stunning views across Edinburgh.
While it can be tempting to stay wrapped up warm at home during the Christmas holidays, venturing outside for a walk in the crisp air can be energising and enjoyable. Check out our 11 winter walks suggestions below.

9. Harlaw and Threipmuir Reservoirs Circular
This Pentland Hills route was named the best family walk in Scotland earlier this week, with an overall score of 9.97 out of 10 in a study carried out by outdoor experts Millets. Located near Balerno, the 4.5km circular trail is considered an easy route and takes an average of one hour and three minutes to complete. Great for little ones who can't walk for hours, this is well worth trying out this winter to get a nice wee dose of country air in your lungs. | National World Photo: Kevin Quinn

10. Dalkeith Country Park
Located in the heart of Midlothian, walkers can enjoy riverside ambles and woodland walks in Dalkeith Country Park. There are 1,000 acres to explore, and a variety of trails - many of which are suitable for bikes and buggies. After a walk, visitors can warm up with a coffee or a soup at the park's restaurant and cafe. | Dalkeith Country Park

11. Cockleroy Hill
A short distance outside Edinburgh, near Linlithgow, is Beecraigs Country Park and Cockleroy Hill. Along the relatively easy route is a picturesque loch within a forest, as well as a park with red deer and highland cows grazing in the fields. On a clear winter's day, walkers get a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape - as well as the Forth bridges in the distance. | John Murray
