The German supermarket chain's multi-million pound investment will involve Lidl being relocated from its current Broxburn store in Greendykes Road as part of their expansion ambitions.
The company says a larger and more sustainable store will be built with features like the in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing, customer toilets, baby changing and ample parking for cars and bicycles.
Lidl GB’s regional head of property, Gordon Rafferty, said: “We’re delighted to break ground and start building on a new larger store for Broxburn.
"It is great for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community.
“We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.”
Lidl and Home Bargains acquired the sites from a joint venture between Rubicon Land and Paradigm.
Rubicon Land’s director, Alistair Reid Thomas, said: “With two excellent and popular retailers scheduled to open in 2021, we are already seeing good levels of interest in the final highly prominent roadside site, suitable for a drive thru/standalone restaurant.”
Lidl now has more than 100 stores in Scotland and recently opened a new retail distribution centre in Motherwell.
