Huge crowds pack The Meadows leaving litter and human waste behind

One local resident reported finding human faeces outside her home near the Meadows.

The Meadows have been trashed for the second consecutive time, after crowds flocked to the city centre park on Scotland’s hottest day of the year.

As temperatures peaked at around 28C in the capital, revellers left thousands of items of litter strewn across the grass for other people to pick up.

One resident shared with the Edinburgh Evening News pictures of human faeces outside her home near the Meadows on Thursday evening.

It comes as Edinburgh Council announced that public toilets across the city would not reopen until next month.

Plans for reopening them are currently being drawn up, but will not be presented to the council for approval until July 9.

There has been widespread criticism of people’s conduct on The Meadows in recent days, after earlier reports of a mass brawl breaking out there on Thursday afternoon.

Council leader Adam McVey condemned the way Edinburgh’s parks were being treated, calling littering “extremely disappointing”.

The Meadows have been trashed for the second consecutive time, after crowds flocked to the city centre park on Scotland’s hottest day of the year.

“While we all want to make the most of the great outdoors safely, it’s important that everyone continues to follow national guidance, stays within the law and is mindful of our shared responsibility to keep Edinburgh clean and tidy – for all our benefit.

“Our parks are not rubbish dumps, nor are they urinals,” he added.

This morning, the clean-up began again in The Meadows, as council workers cleared empty food packaging, cans, and beer bottles from the grass.

But a third day of outdoor gatherings in Edinburgh is unlikely, as forecasters predict a cloudy start to Friday afternoon, with a chance of thunderstorms later on in the evening.

The Met Office has imposed a series of Yellow weather warnings across the whole of mainland Scotland and the rest of the UK, advising that there was a small chance of flooding in some places, and delays to public transport.
