Edinburgh has some fantastic areas to enjoy, including the peaceful oasis of Dean Village, and the bustling nightspots of the Grassmarket and the Shore in Leith.
There are also some great areas on our doorstep, a stone’s throw from Scotland’s capital city, including the tranquil and eye-catching historic towns of South Queensferry and Linlithgow, as well as the incredible countryside on offer for you to enjoy at the Pentland Hills, overlooking Edinburgh from the south.
Check out our photo gallery below to see my 11 favourite areas in and around Edinburgh.

1. Leith
An area that has changed a lot in recent years, Leith is a great place to visit, with lots of top restaurants and bars, including some of my favourite places to go for a meal. Among them the cosy little Italian restaurant Domenico's on Sandport Street and the recently opened Barry Fish by the shore. I'm also here on a regular basis to be 'entertained' by my team Hibs at the 'Leith San Siro' Easter Road Stadium. | alpegor - stock.adobe.com Photo: alpegor - stock.adobe.com

2. Gorgie
Despite being a 'Hibby' I was born and bred in Gorgie and loved my upbringing here, despite living in the shadows of the home of our rivals Hearts at Tynecastle. The area was always so busy and friendly, with lots to do including visiting Gorgie City Farm to see the animals, or just have a kickabout at White Park, or Murieston Park in neighbouring Dalry. And, you get used to the stench from the chemical works and distillery after a few years! | Google Maps Photo: Google

3. Grassmarket
I have so many happy (and hazy) memories of nights out at the Grassmarket in the Old Town with friends over the years. Getting on a bit now, I don't visit the area as much as I used to, and when I do now, I tend to bypass the more 'party centre' pubs, preferring the more calming and relaxing environment of the rooftop terrace bar at Cold Town House when out for a drink, as it provides incredible views of Edinburgh Castle. | National World Photo: Kevin Quinn

4. Portobello
Oh I do like to be beside the seaside. And what better place to go locally than Porty Beach?! Again, I have fantastic childhood memories of trips to Portobello with my parents, including playing on the beach, getting ice cream, going swimming and spending hours at the arcades and funfair. I now like to visit the area with my child, and I love the chilled out vibe during the summer, with some great eateries offering al fresco dining by the beach. | Submitted Photo: Third Party
