Locals in Leith have taken to social media to share their confusion over a mysterious object which has recently appeared on the street.

It appears that many have been paying more attention than usual to unfamiliar sights on their daily exercise route, and this spiky black object on a fence at the corner of Elm Row and Antigua street captured many imaginations.

“We’re now twinned with Berlin, it’s Edinburgh’s TV tower on a budget,” another person added.

Several people jokingly suggested it could be a 5G tower, following false rumours of a link between 5G and coronavirus.

A picture of the object was also posted into the Reddit thread ‘what is this thing’, which allows people to crowdsource information about pictures.

Suggestions included a thermometer, or some kind of communication antenna.

The device is actually used to monitor noise and vibration from construction sites, which is a requirement on many projects.

This ‘EnviroGuard’, created by Mabey, was commissioned by Edinburgh City Council.

It was put in place to monitor noise and vibration levels from the nearby tramworks, and will remain there for the rest of the project.

There are several along the route extending to Newhaven, have you spotted any more?
