Plans lodged to extend Edinburgh supermarket so Aldi can 'better serve the needs of the community' in Oxgangs

Plans have been lodged to extend an Edinburgh supermarket so Aldi can 'better serve the needs of the community' in Oxgangs.

Aldi Stores Ltd submitted an application on March 9 for the erection of an extension to its existing foodstore at 345 Oxgangs Road North, with car park alterations, installation of plant machinery and other associated works.

Aldi are proposing an extension to the front of the existing building line into the existing customer car park to the north, providing an additional 316sqm of floorspace.

Alterations to accommodate the extension will see the loss of nine parking spaces within the existing car park.

In the planning documents, the applicant’s agent Avison Young (UK) Ltd revealed why these plans have been lodged.

The agent said: “Aldi are currently reviewing their operation across its portfolio throughout the UK to ensure that their existing stores can better serve the needs of the community they are located within, while improving the overall sustainability credentials of existing stores.

“As part of this review, Aldi have identified a need to extend their existing Oxgangs store to enable them to continue to provide a full range of their award-winning offer to local residents.”

The plans also include the erection of new customer entrance and exit point, upgraded landscaping provision across the site, the upgrading of the existing store plant with new, more sustainable equipment, including Air Source Heat Pumps.

The agent added: “Aldi is already well established at Oxgangs Road North, and remains committed to further investment at this location to improve the overall shopper experience in this part of Edinburgh.

“Aldi proposes a modest extension to their existing foodstore which will better support retail facilities, improve operational efficiency and make the store more sustainable.

“The development will improve the vitality and viability of the local centre with the potential to create additional linked trips, without causing significant adverse impact on the vitality or viability of existing retailers within Oxgangs Broadway Local Centre.

“In view of these conclusions, it is respectfully requested that the City of Edinburgh Council agree the application proposals for approval at their earliest convenience.”

If the plans are approved there will also be the introduction of an electricity substation, new InPost parcel lockers, and 10 new EV charging spaces, with 41 existing parking bays identified for future conversion to EV charging spaces.

It is proposed that the existing back of house facilities will remain in their current position at the rear of the store, along the southern elevation of the building.

The City of Edinburgh Council’s planning department will now decide upon this application, which has so far received no public comments on the online planning portal.
