Storm Boelo in Edinburgh RECAP: 70mph gusts and heavy rain to batter capital as amber warning issued

An amber weather warning is in place until 9pm on Sunday with travel disruption expected throughout the weekend

Edinburgh is into its second day of severe weather, with gusts of over 60mph expected to sweep the Capital on Sunday.

Met Office forecasters have issued a 24-hour amber weather warning covering most of Scotland amid Storm Boelo.

The amber alert came into force at 9pm on Saturday night, and will run until 9pm on Sunday.

It comes after Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, brought heavy rain and flooding on Friday.

Several Edinburgh attractions have been forced to close for the duration of the weekend, and disruption is expected on the railways and roads.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “Strong winds will spread across northern parts of the UK during Saturday afternoon, combining with spells of heavy rain. Initially strong southerly winds will affect parts of Scotland before more widespread and even stronger westerly winds develop later on Saturday.

“Very windy conditions will then persist overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the southwest later.

“Gusts of 55-65 mph are likely widely with some coastal and exposed areas potentially seeing gusts of 70-80 mph or more, these strongest gusts most likely across Scotland and the far north of England.”
