Edinburgh attraction named second-best free family day out in the UK
The National Museum of Scotland has beaten 118 other attractions across the UK in a new study of the best free family days out, making it an ideal choice for families looking to escape the autumn rain.

With autumn bringing colder temperatures, shorter days and unpredictable weather, finding affordable ways to keep children entertained can become a challenge.
However, families in Edinburgh may not need to travel far, as new research from travel experts Arctic Direct has named the National Museum of Scotland the second-best free family day out in the UK.
The popular Edinburgh attraction achieved an impressive score of 96.39 out of 100, placing it ahead of some of the country's best-known museums and visitor attractions.
The study analysed 120 free attractions and activities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, ranking them on factors including visitor reviews, family appeal, rainy-day suitability and how easily they could fill an entire day.
National Museum of Scotland ranks second in the UK
Located on Chambers Street, the National Museum of Scotland offers visitors the chance to explore a wide range of collections covering natural history, science, technology, art and culture.
With free general admission and plenty to discover indoors, it provides an affordable option for families looking to enjoy a day out without worrying about the autumn weather.
The museum achieved maximum scores for family appeal, full-day potential, rainy-day suitability and weather resilience.
It also performed strongly for visitor ratings and transport accessibility, helping it secure second place in the national rankings.
Scottish attractions claim the top two spots
Scotland performed particularly well in the research, with two of its most popular museums taking first and second place nationally.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow claimed the top spot with a score of 97.75 out of 100, narrowly beating Edinburgh's National Museum of Scotland.
London's Science Museum followed in third place with 95.82, while the National Railway Museum in York ranked fourth with 95.45.
The Natural History Museum in London completed the top five, scoring 95.18.
The results highlight how Scotland's free museums compete with some of the UK's biggest visitor attractions when it comes to providing affordable family entertainment.
Other Edinburgh attractions feature in the rankings
The National Museum of Scotland wasn't the only Edinburgh destination to perform well in the research.
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh placed 60th nationally with a score of 79.57 out of 100, offering families an outdoor option when the weather is more favourable.
Meanwhile, the Museum of Childhood on the Royal Mile ranked 54th with a score of 82.01, while the Scottish National Gallery placed 66th with 78.91.
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery also featured in the rankings, taking 72nd place with a score of 77.95.
These attractions highlight the range of free cultural experiences available across Edinburgh, from exploring historic collections and artworks to enjoying the city's gardens.
Museums offer families an escape from the autumn rain
With wet and windy weather making outdoor plans less reliable, the findings suggest that museums are among the strongest options for families looking to enjoy a day out without paying an admission fee.
All 10 of the highest-ranking attractions achieved maximum scores for rainy-day suitability and weather resilience.
The top six also received maximum scores for family appeal and full-day potential, suggesting families can enjoy several hours of entertainment without needing to spend money on entry.
For Edinburgh families, attractions such as the National Museum of Scotland provide an opportunity to explore and learn together while staying warm and dry.
Free entry doesn't always mean a completely free day out
Although all 120 attractions included in the research offer a way to visit without paying a standard admission fee, Arctic Direct advises families to check for any additional costs before travelling.
Depending on the attraction, these could include parking, temporary exhibitions, guided tours or special activities.
Families should also check opening hours and any booking requirements before setting off, particularly during weekends and school holidays.
How were the UK's best free family attractions ranked?
The research was carried out by Arctic Direct, which analysed 120 free attractions and activities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Each destination received a score out of 100 based on eight factors: Google ratings, number of Google reviews, rainy-day suitability, full-day potential, family appeal, weather resilience, transport accessibility and the likelihood of additional costs.
Higher scores were awarded to attractions with strong visitor reviews, greater family appeal, enough activities to fill a substantial part of the day and good accessibility.
Destinations were also rewarded for being suitable in poor weather and having a lower likelihood of families encountering additional costs.
