Edinburgh weather: Flood alert issued for Edinburgh as Met Office thunderstorm warning extended

A SEPA flood alert has been issued for Edinburgh, as a Met Office thunderstorm warning has been extended.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has issued a flood alert for Edinburgh.

The flood alerts are in place for Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City, Argyll and Bute, Ayrshire and Arran, Central, Dumfries and Galloway, Dundee and Angus, Edinburgh and Lothians, Fife, Findhorn, Nairn, Moray and Speyside, Scottish Borders, Tayside and West Central Scotland.

The flood warning reads: “Rain will persist through most of Saturday and at times there could be some intense, heavy, thundery rain. If the rain falls on the transport network or built-up areas, there is potential for some disruptive surface water flooding impacts, including: flooding to low-lying land and roads, disruption to travel and flooding of properties. Small rivers may also respond and could cause similar impacts.”

Met Office thunderstorm warning

A Met Office yellow thunderstorm warning has been extended until 21:00 this evening (June 14) for Dumfries and Galloway, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian Council, Scottish Borders, West Lothian, Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire.

The Met Office warning reads: “Heavy rain and thunderstorms may lead to some disruption.

“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost. There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.

“Further areas of heavy rain and some thunderstorms will move north during Saturday.

“Rainfall will vary across the warning area and some places will avoid the heaviest rain. However, 15-30 mm of rain is likely in places with some areas perhaps seeing 30-50 mm falling in a few hours. Event rainfall could reach 60-80 mm in some locations. Strong gusts and hail may also accompany some of the thunderstorms.”
