A helter skelter slide in Edinburgh city centre had to be braced by ropes and van to stop it blowing over as gale force winds battered the Capital.

The images, taken today (Tuesday) on Castle Street, show the children's slide with ropes attached to it and a van paked underneath, preventing it blowing towards Princes Street.

Edinburgh Christmas Market has been closed all morning due to the 60mph gusts.

The Evening News shared pictures earlier in the day of market stalls, also on Castle Street, that had blown over due to the severe weather.

Other attractions, including Edinburgh Castle and Edinburgh Zoo, have also been closed all day.

It comes on the back of a yellow weather warning being issued by experts at the Met Office for the Capital and the Lothians.

The A1 from Edinburgh Bypass to the English border is currently closed to high-sided vehicles after two incidents involving lorries blowing over today.

One platform of Haymarket train station was also closed so safety checks could be carried out following damage caused by the high-speed wind.
