Fun for everyone across the city with Edinburgh’s Christmas: Full details of capital events

The Scottish capital is bursting with Christmas cheer as Edinburgh’s Christmas opened last weekend, with its first festive offerings arriving in Princes Street Gardens and the icy attractions on George Street following on Thursday, November 20.
The ‘coolest’ festive activities are on George Street
Edinburgh New Town will once again transform into a sparkling delight to the senses with the opening of George Street’s wintry attractions. The Polar Ice Bar and Ice Rink with Emirates open on 20 November, both offering alternative festive activities to suit all tastes and ages.
The Ice Rink with Emirates brings a touch of Christmas magic to the city’s historic streets. Visitors can grab their skates and glide beneath the twinkling winter lights on the purpose-built rink, surrounded by George Street’s stunning architecture. Relaxed sessions are available for those who need a little more space and a gentler sensory experience while toddler sessions are ideal for those having their first Bambi-like steps on the ice. For those looking for a party, Late Skates sessions feature DJs playing popular tunes so skaters can pirouette to the beat like true pros.
For a unique frosty experience, the Polar Ice Bar offers the opportunity to ‘chill’ in the ‘coolest’ bar in the city, where tables, chairs and glasses are sculpted entirely from ice. This pop-up bar must be kept at a chilly –8°C, but jackets and gloves are provided on arrival to keep you cosy throughout your visit. Delicious festive alcoholic or alcohol-free cocktails are served in individual pre-carved ice glasses, with your first drink included in your entry ticket.
For a one-of-a-kind winter activity, visit the brand-new Family Ice Experience and step into The Ice Queen’s Castle. Designed for all ages, these sessions invite you to wander through a glittering frozen world and marvel at breathtaking ice sculptures, each carved by hand. On arrival, enjoy a refreshing apple juice served in a glass made of ice, or save your token for a comforting hot chocolate afterwards – the perfect way for little ones to warm up after their icy adventure.

Festive treats at East Princes Street Gardens
The Traditional Christmas Markets opened last Friday on what was one of their busiest opening weekends to date, with thousands of visitors soaking up the sparkling sights of its wooden chalets, indulging in festive treats and discovering the cutest handmade gifts from Scottish traders.
Ranked as the UK’s Best Christmas Market 2025 by Locals Insider, Edinburgh’s Christmas is full of cosy spots and festive photo opportunities, as well as over 70 artisan Scottish traders at the Traditional Christmas Markets in East Princes Street Gardens. Wander through the twinkling stalls to find the perfect gift for your loved ones – from handmade paper star lampshades by Starlight Cornwall to premium kitchenware from Selbrae House, embroidery kits from Paraffle, and quirky art and colourful home décor by independent makers Diedododa, to name just a few.
The markets are also the perfect spot to sip on seasonal drinks and nibble on festive treats. Some favourites include award-winning pie-maker Jarvis Pickle, luxury hot chocolate from Hector & Harriet, Raclette at the Alpine Bar, and the delicious mac ’n’ cheese from Mac Love.
The Gardens are also home to some iconic festive rides. For thrill-seekers, the Around the World Starflyer offers an unforgettable experience, soaring 80 metres above the city for breathtaking panoramic views of Edinburgh’s skyline. For something a little slower paced, enjoy a spin on the LNER Big Wheel, taking in sweeping views of the Old Town, Edinburgh Castle and Arthur’s Seat by day, and a sea of glittering lights after dark. Visitors of all ages will love the nostalgic charm of the Helter Skelter, adding classic fairground fun to the festivities.

Fairground rides for all at West Princes Street Gardens
Across the road, West Princes Street Gardens transforms into a lively playground of music, laughter and lights. Here, the Festive Funfair offers something for everyone: gentle rides for little ones, including the Toy Carousel and Cups and Saucers, plus pulse-raising options for thrill-seekers like The Matrix (new for 2025) and Scottish favourite Techno Power.
New to West Princes Street Gardens this year, the Big Man himself will be hosting the much-loved Santa’s Stories experience, tucked under the stunning view of Edinburgh Castle. Each 20-minute session includes a festive tale, a special gift and the chance to meet the beloved Saint Nick. Relaxed sessions will be held weekly, specially designed for children who are neurodivergent or have additional needs, with Audio Described and BSL-interpreted sessions also available. Children can also ensure their all-important wish lists reach Santa safely by posting their letters at the free-to-use Santa’s Post Box and Letter Writing Station.
Between rides, games and greetings with Santa, visitors can enjoy hearty winter warmers, sweet treats and plenty of cosy corners to pause and take in the twinkling views.
