Club rugby: Watsonians aim to douse Currie's fire

Watsonians coach Marcus Di Rollo has made just one change to his starting line-up as the Myreside men look to bounce back from last week's first defeat of the season when they welcome Currie tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).

Edinburgh pro Viliami Fihaki is named in the back row, meaning Sean Crombie returns to his more familiar hooker berth.

“We put a lot into last week’s loss at Hawks, but in the end it got away from us as we tried to force things,” said Di Rollo, who is looking to remedy matters tomorrow.

Currie coach Ben Cairns has shuffled his side because of injury and unavailability. He is looking to build on last Saturday’s breakthrough win, saying: “This week is about using the confidence gained to put in an 80-minute performance and get some momentum. The attitude of the players has been excellent throughout and as long as we maintain this drive to get better then we will continue to do just that.

“There is a good rivalry between the two clubs and I would expect this to be a full-on derby match.”

Across the Capital, Glasgow Warriors’ All Black hooker Corey Flynn features in the Glasgow Hawks side to meet Heriot’s at Goldenacre.

“His inclusion shows the positives of the draft system, as it isn’t every week the boys will get a chance to play against an All Black,” said Heriot’s coach Phil Smith who believes his players are now hitting their stride.

Smith welcomes back skipper Rory Carmichael as well as Callum Marshall and Harry Boisseau for an encounter that could see Heriot’s move into the top four if they record a win.

Meanwhile, Boroughmuir coach Peter Wright has stand-off Chris Laidlaw back for the trip to face basement side Hawick, and hands starting berths to Rory Woodland at lock and flanker Matt Walker in place of the unavailable Matt Tweddle and Dougie Hearn as Muir seek to rediscover the winning habit.

Wright is conscious of the fact that the Borderers are also desperate for points to avoid becoming detached at the foot of the table.

“After a couple of close defeats, things don’t get any easier, travelling to Mansfield Park to play against a Hawick team looking for their first win. And, looking at some of the tries they scored against Ayr, I think this could be an open and exciting encounter,” said Wright.
