David Smith debuts eighth in World Duathlon

The 50-year-old, competing in the 50-54 male category, completed the course in 2:16:04 and was the third-fastest Briton home. Spain’s Jose Manuel Cuadros Escuder took gold in a time of 2:06:04 – exactly ten minutes faster than Smith.

The course, which requires athletes to undertake a 10km run followed by a 42km cycle before finishing with a 5km run, was contested in extremely hot conditions. Smith, who is a member of Edinburgh #3 Triathlon Club, registered the fourth-fastest bike time from a field of 53 in 1:07:42.
