Former Hearts loanee Scott Fraser remains a potential target for Dundee boss Tony Docherty’s side as he looks to fill the void left by captain Luke McCowan’s late summer exit to Celtic.

McCowan registered 10 goals and five assists in the league last season and was a key focal point for the Dark Blues in their first term back in the top-flight as they secured a credible top-half finish.

Fraser, who has proven he can score goals from midfield for both Charlton Athletic and MK Dons in England’s League one, is seen as a potential replacement for McCowan and currently finds himself without a club after being released from his contract at The Valley.

The 29-year-old ironically started his career in Scottish football at the team’s city-rivals Dundee United and played 89 league matches before making the move south of the border.

The Courier understands he is a key target for Dundee but believes the Dens Park club are likely to face competition for the midfielder’s signature, with a number of other clubs also showing interest.

Whether or not that transfer comes off, Docherty is planning for the future at Dundee and has made contract talks with first team stars one of his key priorities moving forward, with a host of players – including Lyall Cameron, Scott Tiffoney and Antonio Portales – out of contract next summer.

“We are still looking – it never stops,” the Dens boss explained.

“You’re working all year round in terms of recruitment. So you’re looking at sustainability and the next stage.

“It’s about keeping your assets, in terms of contract extensions, for the next window.

“And you’re looking at free transfers that have now been made available after the transfer window. We meet regularly to discuss that and we’re still doing that at present.”
