Hearts restricted by UEFA rules on European squad changes - more new players could be added after the deadline
UEFA Conference League registration deadline is tonight
UEFA’s deadline for clubs to register their squad for the Conference League main phase is 10.59pm UK time tonight. Hearts are currently compiling their list and will make changes from the play-off round. As unforgettable as beating Rapid Vienna on penalties to reach the league stage was, there are new faces and returning mainstays ready to reinforce the club’s European squad.
Up to 25 players can be registered on the ‘A’ list, with an unlimited number of youngsters allowed on the back-up ‘B’ list. However, Hearts are restricted by their lack of “club-trained” players. That is defined as players registered at Tynecastle for at least three seasons between age 15 and 21. UEFA say a minimum of four “club-trained” players must be included in the 25-man squad, but Hearts have only one in their first team who is fit - James Wilson. Consequently, they forfeit the other three places unless they want to promote inexperienced kids. Hence the club taking only 22 men to Austria last week instead of 25.
American striker JJ Williams is certain to be registered for the Conference League, while Harry Milne is close to returning from injury. Stephen Kingsley and Malachi Fagan-Walcott should be fit next month at some stage. The league phase begins when Danish side Nordsjaelland visit Tynecastle on 15 October, so there is time for injured players to regain full fitness and take part. Whether there is room for them all is another matter.
Even if Hearts sign and register Aron Benjaminsen and Leart Kabashi with the Scottish Football Association before tonight, it would seem unlikely that the teenagers will be on their UEFA list. Tynecastle officials are mindful that they must obey rules. As well as four “club-trained” players, teams are required to name up to four “association-trained” players in the ‘A’ list. This is players who have played with Hearts or another Scottish club for at least three seasons since the age of 15. Players on the ‘B’ list must be aged 15 to 21 and registered with the club for at least two years.
Scotland’s summer transfer window closes at 5pm on Thursday but tonight’s European deadline brought forward the need for Hearts to complete their major pieces of business. Any key signing would be involved in European ties so there has been a desire to get deals done before today. Nobody needs the stress of the clock ticking towards 11pm while doctors are awaiting the new striker’s medical results.
Nonetheless, Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken and his staff still have some major decisions to make this evening. The Riccarton first-team squad currently totals 32 players, not including Benjaminsen and Kabashi. So 10 won’t make the Conference League squad. One of two goalkeepers, Zander Clark and Kieran Wright, are likely to miss out. Craig Halkett is injured, as is Tom Renaud. Finlay Pollock - the only other “club-trained” Hearts first-team player - has been out and Eduardo Ageu is still not ready for competitive action. Will MJ Kamson-Kamara drop out to accommodate Milne, Kingsley, or Fagan-Walcott? Might Amadou Ba-Sy be surplus to requirements after Williams’ arrival?
UEFA do permit emergency changes to European squads after tonight’s deadline. In the event of long-term injury or illness, a replacement can be slotted in up until 10.59pm UK time on the day before a Conference League tie. Long-term injury/illness is defined by UEFA as a 30-day absence for goalkeepers and a 60-day absence for outfield players. Should a player recover quicker than the 30-day or 60-day period, he would remain ineligible with UEFA.
Vrancken’s task is an unenviable one as he faces the prospect of disappointing a few people. It is a part of the job he will accept as Hearts prepare to extend their 2026 European adventure. Everyone wants to be involved against Nordsjaelland, Trabzonspor, Thun, Monaco, Borac and Pafos, but only 22 will make the cut.
