New Hearts boss Daniel Stendel and Hibs manager Jack Ross are set to continue a rivalry which started last season.

The pair were involved in an English League One promotion race as Barnsley and Sunderland bosses respectively.

In games between the two, it was the Mackems who came out on top as they won 4-2 in the first meeting, followed by a goalless draw.

When it came to the ultimate goal of reaching the Championship, the race was won by Stendel who guided the more modest Yorkshire side to England’s second tier at the expense of Sunderland, whom many thought Ross would lead to promotion.

It was something Hearts noted in their statement confirming the German’s appointment in the aftermath of the 1-0 defeat at Motherwell which leaves the Jambos tenth, level on points with Hamilton and St Johnstone who sit 11th and 12th respectively.

“Having been relegated prior to his arrival, Daniel immediately turned round their fortunes, leading the Oakwell outfit to a second-placed finish ahead of Jack Ross’ Sunderland, and securing promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking,” the statement read.

It didn’t go unnoticed by fans of both sides, and within 34 minutes of Stendel being announced it seemed Hibs had their say on the matter via Twitter.

They posted a picture of Jack Ross shaking hands with Paul Hanlon following the side’s 3-0 victory over Aberdeen at Easter Road and it was accompanied by a caption which simply had an emoji making a ‘shushing’ gesture.

Fans were speculating as to what the meaning of the message was, with some thinking it was aimed at Hanlon’s critics.

However, it is thought by many it is a reply to Hearts’ statement confirming their new manager.
