Arriving with plenty of potential and hype, the player experienced difficulties with the club’s fans which culminated in being jeered off against St Johnstone in December.

However, under Daniel Stendel, he emerged as a key player and won over the support with a number of fine displays, showing plenty of commitment, passion and quality.

Clare also filled the penalty taking responsibility, including one against rivals Hibs in a 3-1 win.

True heart of the club

On social media he posted: “Firstly I’d like to say a massive thank you to Heart of Midlothian FC and Ann Budge for giving me the opportunity to play for such a massive club and gain so many priceless experiences that improve me not only as a player but also a person.

"I’m disappointed the way the club was treated in the end, especially with so much football left to be played but I have no doubt with the players they have on board the club will be back where they belong in no time.

“I'd liked to also thank all the staff and players that were there, their help and belief in me at all time, it’s something that I will always remember and appreciate.

“Lastly, a huge thanks to the fans for not only their support for me but also the crazy support they have given to the club over the years but especially in this unprecedented situation with so many new pledges and season tickets being bought. It shows the true heart of the club is the fans and that’s something no one can ever debate.

“I wish the club all the success and thanks.”

Clare, who scored 12 goals in 71 appearances for Hearts, has signed a three-year deal with Oxford. He could be joined through the exit door by Conor Washington.

He told the club’s website: “Oxford are a good club. They always play an exciting style of football which will hopefully suit the way I want to play. They went close to promotion last season but are adding good players to a very strong squad and I know they are very ambitious to keep pushing on from this position.

“I have stayed pretty fit over the last few months of lockdown but now it will be a case of keep building that up over pre-season, get to know the lads here, and try to play my part in helping the team go one better this time than last season.”
