Two former Hearts stars could make deadline day transfers as ex Jambo pushed towards Rangers exit

A Rangers exit could beckon for one ex-Hearts star while another may join Wigan Athletic.

A pair of former Hearts players could make transfer deadline day moves in England - with one possibly exiting Rangers.

Stephen Humphrys is currently at Bradford City at League One level down south, where the summer window shuts at 11pm on Tuesday, and clubs are scrambling for deals. The forward spent time on loan at Hearts from Wigan Athletic between 2022-2023 before permanently exiting in 2024. Now the Latics may seek to re-sign him from the Bantams.

Transfer journalist Alan Nixon claims ‘ Wigan are making a late bid to sign old boy Stephen Humphreys from Bradford City.’ He adds that ‘Latics are looking for a goalscorer and have made an approach to Bantams for the forward who had a spell with them a few years ago.’

What did Stephen Humphrys achieve at Hearts?

Humphrys played 25 times for the Jambos and memorably scored from around the halfway line in a Tynecastle clash with Dundee United. John Souttar meanwhile could join him in England as his Rangers future looks in doubt. He has been limited in minutes at Ibrox under ex-Tynecastle gaffer Derek McInnes since his arrival as manager and England is an option if a deal can be agreed in time.

America could be a fallback option with the MLS window open later and there are options there for the Scotland defender who appeared for Hearts between 2016-2022 before joining Rangers. It’s claimed in the Daily Record: “It also remains to be seen if defender John Souttar will move on before the close of the English window. He has interest down south but also has options in Major League Soccer, where the window is open later.”

McInnes said of Rangers’ transfer dealings: "We're still working hard to get one in at the minute. We're getting closer on that one, but we believe it's only going to be the one in. On players out, there have been a few conversations.

“There may well be things develop over the next 24-48 hours on that front. But again, these things are natural. I think most clubs will be seeing and trying to do the last couple of days' business, trying to get a couple of things in that they need. So we're no different from that. The club's done a lot of business early on. Not every manager gets exactly what they want. But you've got to be grateful at times for what you do get."
