Former Hibs star becomes free agent as career highlight identified in heartfelt farewell message
Midfielder was released by EFL Championship club and is now without a club
Former Hibs midfielder Greg Docherty has become a free agent after he was released by EFL Championship high-flyers Charlton Athletic.
The 29-year old - who spent the second half of the 2019/20 season on loan at Easter Road from Rangers - captained the South London side to League One promotion two years ago via the play-offs. Docherty made 39 appearances during their first season back in the second tier but has since fallen out favour, as he now leaves the club by mutual consent.
The former Scotland Under-21 international started his career at Hamilton Academical before moving to his boyhood club Rangers in 2017. As well as Hibs, he was also farmed out to Shrewsbury Town while at Ibrox. Straight after returning to Rangers from Leith, he was sold south of the border to Hull City, where he spent four years before moving to Cardiff.
Docherty scored three goals for Hibs during his eight appearances, notably making an instant impact on his debut against Kilmarnock in a 2-1 league victory. Under former Leith boss Jack Ross, he signed on loan for the club while striker Florian Kamberi went the opposite way to Ibrox.

Docherty on Charlton career highlight
As he bid an emotional farewell to the club he captained for over a year, Docherty claimed his highlight at Charlton was leading them out to victory in the 2025 Play-Off final at Wembley, where they defeated Leyton Orient 1-0. He told the club website: “To be named captain of such an iconic football club was nothing short of a privilege. I felt the weight and expectation that title carries, but I can wholeheartedly say I gave my absolute all to represent the club properly every single day with the upmost respect that I felt it deserved through the good and the bad moments.
“I joined the club with one aim: to help make Charlton an established Championship club again. Being the first captain to lead the club to promotion and then safety the following season is an achievement I am, and always will be, immensely proud of. Thinking back to the play-off campaign fills me with so much pride. From the first-leg pitch invasion at full time, to seeing 40,000+ red flags and shirts at Wembley and lifting the play-off final trophy, it’s a feeling I don’t think will ever be replicated.”

Former Hibee ‘devastated’ to leave club
Charlton have enjoyed a flawless start to the current campaign under manager Nathan Jones and currently sit third in the Championship table. While Docherty featured in their 5-1 EFL Cup defeat to Tottenham, the manager hasn’t trusted him to play in the league.
He continued: “It goes without saying that I am devastated to be leaving this club but football moves fast. I’m so proud of what I achieved here and I leave behind an amazing chapter in my football career, an incredible group of teammates, staff and people behind the scenes who make this club what it is, along with genuine friendships that I’ll cherish for a long time.”
