An EFL club have been left shocked over managing to sign a former Hibs and Rangers star.

Glenn Middleton has spent the last season with Doncaster Rovers but his future heading into this term was uncertain after being told minutes would be limited. He broke through in Scottish football at Rangers before stints at Hibs, St Johnstone and Dundee United, alongside a spell in England with Bradford City, before permanently joining Doncaster.

It’s now been confirmed that Rochdale AFC have signed him for their plans in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. They have paid a fee after placing the former Hibs and Rangers winger near the top of their targets list prior to Tuesday night’s signing deadline for clubs down south.

What former Hibs player have a club in England signed?

Head Coach Ian Watson said: “Glenn’s got pace, experience and has performed really well in League One and in Scotland as well. He’s a huge signing for us, and we’re excited to get him in. He was one of the first players we looked at earlier in the summer, and we didn’t think it was going to be possible, so big credit to the Club for being able to get it done.”

Middleton added: “I’m delighted to be here. I had great first discussions with the manager. He’s very clear on what he has set out to do this season, and for that I’m looking forward to it. I like to be as direct as I can with the ball. I want to create chances for others and hopefully score a few myself.”

Doncaster boss Grant McCann explained: “Glenn is at the stage of his career where he needs to be playing regular football, and we feel this is a move that suits all parties.“We’re grateful for the work he’s put in during his time here and he departs with everyone’s best wishes.”

The 26-year-old winger joins from League One side Doncaster Rovers on a permanent deal, signing a contract until the summer of 2027. In January 2018, Middleton moved back to Glasgow to join the team he supported as a youngster, Rangers.

“He made his debut in a Europa League tie at home to FK Shkupi of North Macedonia in July 2018, going on to make 28 appearances across all competitions during the 2018/19 campaign. Loan spells at Hibernian, Bradford City and St Johnstone followed, before a permanent departure in 2022 to Dundee United. In his second season at Tannadice, Middleton played a pivotal role in The Tangerines’ promotion back to the Scottish Premiership at the first attempt.”
