Players from Hearts, Hibs and Spartans were all under consideration. So whether you’re an avid fan of the SWPL or new to the women’s game in Edinburgh and looking to find out more, here is our top 10 players of 2022.
5. Leah Eddie (Hibs)
The 21-year-old has had a very successful year. After earning her first Scotland cap last year, her form has kept her in the SWNT squad throughout 2022. She made an additional appearance in a 2-0 win over Slovakia in February. For Hibs she has also added to her achievements by reaching 50 appearances for the club in October. The defender has also developed a unique trait of scoring directly from a corner. She did just that in a 3-1 win away to Aberdeen. Many would be forgiven for thinking it was luck, but her technique paid off again in the last Hibs game of 2022 when they beat Dundee United 4-1. Photo: Malcolm Mackenzie
6. Georgia Timms (Hearts)
Signed in the summer from Lewes in England, the 24-year-old striker introduced herself in the best way possible by bagging a hat-trick on her debut against Partick Thistle and hasn't looked back since. Timms has formed an effective partnership in attack with Erin Rennie, the pair of them helping to propel Hearts up to fourth place in the table going into the winter break. Photo: Hearts FC
7. Rebecca McAllister (Hearts)
The teenage midfielder became the first Hearts player to be capped by Scotland after receiving an international call-up and taking to the field against Venezuela in November. She played for Scotland under-19s in April and was in the senior squad by September before making winning her first cap. A technically gifted midfielder, she initially joined Hearts on loan from Celtic and made a big impression before signing a permanent deal in the summer. McAllister, who has been capped at under-15, 16, 17 and 19 level, has had a brilliant season for Hearts and scored a spectacular winning goal against Motherwell in November, helping her team consolidate fourth place. 8. Becky Galbraith (Spartans)
Now 33, the Spartans striker is like a fine wine and seems to be getting better with age. She was the club's player of the year in 2021/22 after scoring 19 goals in 23 games – including a double in the derby win over Hibs – and is still finding the net with regularity this season. Galbraith is a potent weapon for Spartans running in behind to stretch opposition defences. Photo: Mark Brown / SFC
