Now that football in 2023 has come to a close in the SWPL1, we look over which players have stood out throughout the year in Edinburgh. Hibs', Hearts' and Spartans' players had tough and highly memorable moments throughout 2023. However, these 11 players have stood out over the rest for their contributions to their club throughout the entire year.
5. LB - Ronaigh Douglas
Easily Spartans' most consistent performer, Douglas can play anywhere on the pitch. So far this season she has been seen at both full-back and CDM. Despite fortunes not going the club's way so far this campaign, Douglas has consistently been one of the best players on the pitch and rarely deserves to be on the losing side. Earlier in the campaign she also made her 200th appearance for the club. Credit: Malcolm Mackenzie Photo: Malcolm Mackenzie
6. CDM - Ciara Grant
The Hearts midfielder is easily one of the best players in the division. After securing a record fourth-place spot in the league with Hearts, Grant was named in the PFA Team of the Season alongside Brownlie. Her form also saw her named into the Republic of Ireland squad for the World Cup. Grant has also netted important goals for Hearts throughout, with her late equaliser against Hibs in the Edinburgh derby the standout. Credit: Malcolm Mackenzie Photo: Malcolm Mackenzie
7. CM - Ellis Notley
Always a consistent performer, Notley never has a bad game for Hibs. Whether it be in defence, midfielder or attack, the 24-year-old always does a job and ensures the side is doing everything to get the result. Her adaptability on the field has helped Hibs through many problematic times, no more so than the club’s injury crisis at the start of 2023. Credit: Malcolm Mackenzie Photo: Malcolm Mackenzie
8. CM - Michaela McAlonie
McAlonie has only got better as the year has progressed. The midfielder had a great 2022/23 season where she was easily one of the best Hibs players that campaign. However, over the last six months, she has become one of the best and most entertaining players in the division. Her attacking IQ and tricky feet have pushed Hibs forward on many occasions and helped them dominate the match. This has only become more evident with the club now consistently earning big results.
