Mouat signs off on a high note as he shines in Canada
The world junior gold medallist flew straight to Canada after finishing fourth with his Murrayfield club-mate Gina Aitken at last week’s Mixed Doubles World Championship in Sweden, and a jet-lagged Mouat also looked a little shell-shocked as he lost his opening two matches in Alberta.
His faint hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals then received an unexpected boost when he claimed his biggest scalp to date by stunning Sweden’s double world champion Niklas Edin 6-5. The Napier student’s subsequent 7-2 victory over America’s world bronze medallist John Shuster set up a tie-breaker with Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock, but despite leading 2-0 and 3-2, Mouat eventually went down 7-3 to miss out on a last eight spot.
“We’ve been having a good time here,” he said. “It’s been cool to see these great teams and get the chance to play against them.”
