Based on the popular book series by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander is the time travelling fantasy drama which brought Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan to our screens as Claire and Jamie Fraser. Filmed in Scotland and watched by fans all over the world, we thought we’d share a few interesting things you may not know about the show.
9. It was inspired by Dr Who
The setting for Diana Gabaldon's first Outlander novel was inspired by an episode of Doctor Who. The writer says watching Frazer Hines in The War Games influenced the character of Jamie. Similarities have also been drawn between Outlander and Brigadoon, a 1954 film which sees Gene Kelly transported back in time and fall in love with a Highlander. Photo: Doctor Who | BBC
10. Kilts are worn traditionally
Many of Outlander's actors have admitted to wearing their kilts in the traditional way. That is, without wearing underwear underneath. “I’m a true Scotsman, and it’s one of the joys of working on the show is wearing the kilt,” Sam Heughan told Entertainment Weekly, "It can actually be very comfortable."
