Edinburgh ranks among the UK’s strongest cities for stable earnings and manageable living costs

For many people, financial confidence comes down to a simple question: do they feel in control of their money? While income plays an important role, employment prospects, housing costs and overall financial stability can have just as much impact on day-to-day peace of mind.

To find out where residents are on the strongest financial footing, The Investors Centre analysed income, employment, housing costs and financial stress indicators across the UK, creating a ranking of the country's most financially confident places.

The research found that Edinburgh ranks third among the most financially confident places in the country, performing particularly well in areas linked to earnings and employment.

Residents in the Scottish capital earn a median weekly wage of £704.80, placing Edinburgh among the top-performing locations in the study. Disposable income also ranks highly at £21,837 per person, while more than eight in ten working-age residents are employed.

One factor helping Edinburgh stand out is its balance between strong earnings and housing costs. While property prices and rents remain significant, the city's average house price of £293,000 is considerably lower than those found in many of the highest-earning areas of southern England.

The city also records relatively low levels of financial distress. Its insolvency rate is among the lowest in the study, suggesting fewer residents are experiencing severe financial difficulties than in many other parts of the UK.

Edinburgh was the highest-ranked major city in Scotland and one of only a handful of large urban areas to feature near the top of the national rankings. The findings suggest residents benefit from a combination of strong wages, healthy employment levels and comparatively manageable housing costs.

While several of the highest-ranked places owe their position to one standout strength, Edinburgh performs well across the board. St Albans and Winchester benefit from some of the highest incomes in the country, despite steep house prices, while Tunbridge Wells combines strong earnings with low unemployment. Elsewhere, Stirling, Perth and Newry are helped by more affordable housing and rental costs, and Lichfield stands out for having the highest employment rate in the study.
