HE’S the beloved “soldier bear” who struck fear into the hearts of the German army during the Second World War.

Now Wojtek the Bear will be honoured with a life and a quarter size bronze monument, which will be unveiled in November in Princes Street Gardens.

Sculptor Alan Beattie-Herriot has designed the £300,000 monument of the brown bear who carried ammunition for Polish soldiers at the battle of Monte Cassino.

He was adopted by Polish troops and returned to Scotland with the men who were based in army camps in the Borders.
