Nineteen ninety-five was a year of big events, grand reopenings and major milestones in Edinburgh.

A generation ago this summer, the Cutty Sark Tall Ships descended on Leith Docks. Thousands flocked to see the famous sailing ships which were festooned in all manner of colourful flags and regalia.

The year also witnessed the reopening of the home of Scottish rugby, Murrayfield, following a multi-million pound overhaul, while on Morrison Street the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) swung its shiny doors open for the first time.

Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995, while the city’s main thoroughfare Princes Street witnessed history being made when thousands participated in Scotland’s first ever official gay rights march.
