This is by no means an exhaustive list – and we could have included Shaun Maloney, who played for Villa before managing Hibs, and Tommy Craig, who turned out for Villa before a player-coach stint with Hibs in the mid-eighties. Willie Groves is another who could have been included, having featured for the Villans as well as West Brom in England, with spells at Hibs and Celtic either side of his time south of the border.
Not every player made a senior appearance for both teams – with Harry McKirdy only featuring for Villa at youth level, for example – but there is a wide and varied selection of well-known names, and some perhaps not so well-known, who have had spells with both teams.
9. Johnny MacLeod
Talented winger began his senior career with Hibs with his performances leading to a then record transfer to Arsenal in 1961. Impressed for the Gunners, scoring their first-ever goal in Europe, and caught the eye with Villa when he joined in 1964. Eventually moved onto KV Mechelen in Belgium before spells with Raith and Newtongrange Star. Photo: Getty Images
10. Isaiah Osbourne
Birmingham-born midfielder came through the youth ranks at Villa but only made a handful of first-team appearances across five seasons. Joined Hibs in 2011 and played 35 times including the 2012 Cup final defeat by Hearts before returning to England to sign for Blackpool. 11. Joe Ward
Five seasons with Clyde earned him a move to Villa where he struggled, playing just three times before returning to Scotland with Hibs. He fared little better at Easter Road, playing nine times without scoring, and moved on to Dundee United, playing six games. 12. Ulises de la Cruz
Ecuadorian internationalist became Hibs' most expensive signing when he joined for £700,000 from Liga de Quito in 2001. Played just over 30 games for Hibs, bagged a brace against Hearts and shone in the UEFA Cup against AEK Athens but joined Villa after the 2002 World CUp. Now a politician in his homeland.
