A proposal of application notice was submitted by the City of Edinburgh Council to its own planning department on July 1, to build Granton Waterfront Primary School on land 250 metres east of 11 West Shore Road, Edinburgh.

The plans show a proposed new two-stream primary school, nursery, and Enhanced Support Base (ESB) at Granton Waterfront, alongside an outline strategy to accommodate future expansion to a three-stream school.

The proposals form an integral part of the wider Granton Waterfront Development Framework and have been developed in close co-ordination with the Phase 1 masterplan to ensure the school is successfully integrated within the emerging urban context, with the former site of Granton Gasworks transformed in recent years.

These plans come just a week after an application was lodged to build 275 new homes, in the latest stage of the wider Granton Waterfront Masterplan.

Current plans show that new developments will eventually deliver more than 5,000 new homes in the area around the Granton Gasholder landmark.

The new school would be situated just north of the proposed new homes, with more details set to be revealed at community consultation events in August and October.

Although no fixed dates have been provided yet, one community consultation meeting will take place at Muirhouse Library at some time in the week commencing August 24. Another is lined up for Granton Station Square during the week beginning October 5.

An online survey will be released in the week commencing August 24, on the new dedicated website established to showcase the plans for the new Granton Waterfront Primary School.

Approving the pre-application consultation on July 21, the council’s chief planning officer David Givan said: “Engagement with the local community should be carried out in accordance with the Edinburgh Planning Concordat. This sets out the role of the community council, the developer and the council in the pre-application consultation process.

“A report on the community consultation must be submitted with the planning application. Failure to do so will invalidate the application. The report should clearly set out how you have taken community’s views into account.”

The planning documents show that the local community councils, ward councillors and other local politicians were informed of the primary school plans in June.

Following the community consultation, a full planning application is expected to be submitted for the new primary school later this year.
