9. Fat Sam's
Situated in the old meat market at Fountainbridge, Fat Sam's was an American gangster-themed restaurant that featured a robotic band and speakeasy vibe. Children were handed the iconic "I Survived Fat Sam's" badge if they finished their grub. Photo: SUSAN NISBET
10. Whiplash Trash
For years it was an immensely popular hangout that bestowed upon Cockburn Street a decidedly goth-like edge. Whiplash Trash is remembered for its abundance of off-the-wall clothing, tattooing and piercing services and its selection of apparatus for the consumption of certain plant-based substances. 11. Odeon cinema
Opening as the New Victoria on 25 August 1930, the same day Sean Connery was born, the Odeon cinema on Clerk Street has been much missed since its closure in 2003. Although it has lain vacant for almost 20 years, the art deco building thankfully still stands. Photo: Albert Jordan
12. John Menzies
Specialising in everything from stationery and books to toys and records, John Menzies appeared to have no limit to the variety of wares it had on offer. Its stores are now closed but the Edinburgh-founded company survives with its distribution and aviation arms. Photo: Hamish Campbell
